What makes a good game?

There’s so many technical things that can make a good game. Having simple rules are one of the few things that make a good game. There’s nothing more difficult to starting a game than having rules that don’t make sense or there are too many. I also believe that having too many mechanics can ruin a game as well. There are games that have many mechanics, and are really fun to play, but if there isn’t a purpose to having certain mechanics then it’s a waste to have them.

Ultimately and truthfully, what makes a great game? If you like to play it. Any game that you enjoy playing is a good game. Games that don’t get played are really the ones that aren’t good. If you like playing a game, and you enjoy all the mechanics and the rules are perfect for you, then that makes a good game. Playing games is really important because they’re always a learning experience no matter what. The best games and the good games are the ones that we enjoy playing.

Murder is a multiplayer board game where you use cards, toy weapons, and pawns to cleverly kill your opponents until you’re the last person standing and become the criminal mastermind.

Finding Love is a board game where you have an avatar that resembles your true love and the goal is to pick up cards to move across the board to make it to your true love, but some people will try to reach their true love first and if they do you lose.

Ducks in a Row is a children’s card game where they must line up all the cards in matching pairs of the same duck, and the person with the most matches wins.

Influencer is a board game where multiple players will answer pop culture questions and move across the board to get a thumbs up token every time they get a question right, but the only way to win is to have the most likes and reach the blue checkmark at the end of the board.

Knights of the crusade is a multiplayer board game where cards are used to grow your army and the more cards and battles you win, the more holy relics you will receive, but the ultimate prize is to win the holy grail by controlling majority of the board.

Takenoko is a bamboo garden board came where multiple players add on to an existing board to create a bigger garden for a hungry panda to eat, and earn points using cards, weather tokens, and actions to gain the most points.

Lost Soul is a board game that uses your avatar piece to find your soul by answering questions on trivia cards, and the more you answer correctly and adhere to the rules on the board you will win the game.

Lost Soul is a one player video game where your avatar must go through multiple worlds battling enemies, and gathering enough tokens or “life source” to win the game.

Hidden Object is a multiplayer board game that uses a depiction of a mansion and 3D modeled objects for players to gather while picking up cards to move across the board. At the beginning, a card is selected from the object pile and placed downwards. The object that was selected is the object to collect, but remains hidden until all the objects are collected and once the objects are collected the card is revealed and whoever has the object wins.  

Peter Pan is a board game where you travel down a path as a lost boy by picking up cards, and rolling dice to determine how you get to Peter Pan’s hideout to hide from Captain hook without giving away the hiding spot.

Gold Rush is a multiplayer board game where you will build the board by buying pieces with golden tokens in order to mine more gold, and the person with the most territories mined wins.

Silk Road is a 4-player board game based in china that uses cards and collectors’ tokens to earn you a better living as a merchant, fisherman, bamboo gardener, or a monk. The person with the most items collected based on the number of points they’ve collected wins the game. The game is over when someone finds the golden dragon card and indicates the last round of the game.

Jewel Thief is a card game where there are 4 different gems that you must collect and you must have 10 of each to become King, but there’s a troll card that other players can play to steal your cards.

Tattooed is a multiplayer board game that has a person’s body that’s currently blank and the object of the game is to use cards and dice to get the person covered in tattoos of your choice. The bigger the tattoo the more points you get, and in order to pick up pieces of a tattoo you must roll dice to select the card that matches the number on the die.

Chicken Soup is a card game where you try to collect as many chicken cards for your grandma to make chicken soup. Every player gets a different recipe card and must collect the things on the list, and however many chickens you need. If you get a rat or raccoon card, you lose all of your chickens and ingredients and need to start over.

Boom is a multiplayer boardgame that is in the shape of a periodic table where the players get a card of specific elements they need to create a chemical reaction, but the only way to get the elements is to create them by trading protons and neutrons or purchasing the element with money you earn based on your discoveries.

Bonanza

Bonanza is a collecting card game where you collect different bean cards. Every bean card you get earns you coins and the more coins you have the more likely you are to win. There are a few strategies to play with this game. You can collect more cards in order to get more coins, or you can continually trade in your cards for fewer coins more frequently. This is more of a play as you go and doesn’t require as much strategy. You can also trade your cards with other players to make the game more interesting.

Splendor

Splendor is a card game that allows you to collect gems and cards in order to gain 15 points to win the game. This game used gem tokens in order to purchase cards. Once you purchased cards you were able to get points for having different gems. Once you reach 15 points you win the game. This game uses strategy but requires you to be fluid in your thinking because there are other players that will get cards before you will. There’s different ways to get 15 points and it’s better to be open to all the gems rather than a select few.

Rules for 2 Games

Original Idea:

Zodiac

            You have to match the correct personality traits to their proper zodiac signs. There are 12 zodiac signs and there are a bunch of cards that match up to their zodiac signs. There are two decks, one for the zodiac signs, and one for the traits. The person who has the closest birthday picks the zodiac sign. The object of the game is to have most of the zodiac traits for that particular sign. Everyone gets 7 cards, and you are able to see which sign they belong to. You need to have 12 different traits for the zodiac sign to win. On your turn you can put down as many traits as you want, but you can only pick up one card at a time. You can also trade your cards on your turn. You can select a player and ask to trade as many cards as you want. Since you are trading the other person needs to accept cards from you, and they can decline. If they decline you need to pick up only one card.

Metaphor:

Zodiac is a card game where you will play with two decks and try to match the correct trait with the correct signs, and whoever has the most cards at the end wins.

  1. There are two decks of cards. One will say zodiac traits and the other says zodiac signs. Shuffle the decks and deal all players 5 zodiac trait cards. Do not show your cards
  2. Place the zodiac sign deck in the middle of the game and then flip over one card to reveal a zodiac sign.
  3. Everyone except for one player will place the trait they think goes best with the sign and then pick up another card.
  4. The person who sits judges first is the person who has the closest birthday, and then goes clockwise from there
  5. There is a cheat sheet for all of the signs and the person judging can determine who made the correct guess. If no one made the correct guess then all of those cards including the zodiac sign gets discarded.
  6. The rounds continue in a clockwise direction.
  7. The person with the most cards wins.

If you do not come across a victory card, but want to win, you will have to attack and the opponent and the opponent will have to use all their cards against you and lose.

Metaphor:

This Means War is a card game that uses real life armies to battle other players armies using specific attack, block, and victory cards. You win by playing an instant victory card, or until you lose all of your attacking cards.

Rules:

  1. There are two decks of cards. Each player picks their own deck, and what army they would like to use. Each army has special attack and blocking abilities.
  2. Everyone will select three cards from their deck and place them face up. You will also draw 5 more cards and not show anyone.
  3. You can begin attacking immediately by using one of the three cards in front of you. Your attack power is indicated at the bottom of your card.
  4. If you attack an opponent with a card, they must have the same attack power or less. If you use your attack card you will need to discard it.
  5. Once you discard your attack card, you will select one of the 5 cards in you hand to place upwards for everyone to see. You will draw again from your own deck.
  6. You may choose to block an opponent, but only if your blocking power is more than the attack power. The opponent will lose two cards in their hand and not pick up from their deck. Once you block you must discard and replace your card. Draw from your pile.
  7. If you are out of cards in your hand you lose the game.
  8. If you come across a victory card in your deck you must use it immediately during your turn and you win the game.
  9. You can attack multiple cards if your attack card is high enough and equals the amount you are attacking.
  10. If you remove all three cards from your opponent you win the game.

5 card games

War Game

            Something with only color-coded cards. Everyone gets 5 cards. You go around and pick up one card and put a black one down. If you only have colored cards, you can put a color down but then you have to discard one too. If you run out of cards, you lose. Majority of the cards are colored black. If a red card comes up and everyone has to put a colored card down. If someone does not have a color card they lose. The rounds continue until one person is left standing.

Transylvania

            There’s a deck of cards filled with different monsters. Everyone picks up 5 cards, and there’s one person that sits out every round. Everyone puts a card and then the person that sits out shuffles the cards thrown in the pile and then deals them out. If someone gets a Dracula card, they are instantly dead. Then everyone has to figure out who killed the person who died, and if you are accused you must argue your case. The person who sits out put everything to a vote and then that person who is voted out can reveal if they killed the person or not. The game continues until one person is left standing. If you win the round you get a point. The person with the most points wins the game.

Speed Russian Roulette

            Card game where there are images of a gun and there are 10 bullet cards. You sit in a circle and everyone picks up cards as fast as they can when it’s their turn. If you get a bullet card you die. Whoever has the most cards at the end wins. You keep score by counting how many cards you earned, and once you reach 500 you win.

Love letter Game Review

This is a card game played with 16 cards and they all have different abilities. The object of the games is to remove all opponents by using the cards to exclude them from the game. When you are the last person standing you win a token. The person that has 4 tokens at the end wins.

This game is based on medieval characters like a prince, princess, wizard, knight, etc. All of the cards have special abilities and rules that come into play with the game. This game allows you to use deductive reasoning and strategy to play against your opponents.

In the matter of reviewing the Acts of this game, there are multiple acts throughout. The first round is essentially one act, but you play multiple rounds in order to get your tokens to win the game. Therefore, there is a larger act being completed while playing in the smaller acts. The learning curve with this game is not very difficult, but the first round is definitely helpful to understand how the game is played. Once you learn how the game is played you are able to come up with a strategy and go into the second act. Once you are in the second act, this is a very confrontational part of the game. Anything goes, and this part of the game goes quickly. Towards the end there are the rates where you feel the alarm of victory or defeat, but you are really not sure who is going to win. It all depends on how the cards are played out. So, initial game is quick, but when you play multiple games in order to get tokens the conflict lasts longer. This is where you can really drag out act 2 because multiple people can win the small games. Once you hit act 3 towards the end there can be either a clear winner, or other people can attempt to play and get more tokens. There is some strategy to winning, but there are some curveballs in there to really give you that alarm at the end.

5 Game Ideas 1/28/2021

Kahoot and drinking combined

This game is played on a mobile device or a computer. This is where the player will fill out a questionnaire and those answers will become the questions. Once the questions are made then people will start answering the questions. If you get a question wrong you have to take one drink. If you get 3 wrong in a row you finish your drink. The person who gets the most questions correct wins.

Meme Generator

This game is also played on a mobile device. You will have a meme saying come up and you will have to go through your camera roll or your photo library to match the meme. Every person takes a turn to not play and to vote on the funniest meme created and continues. The person who reaches 21 points wins.

Mad Lib Creator

This game is played on a cell phone. This is where you have a paragraph or a story with a bunch of blank spaces in it, and you can only click on you suggested text messages. You are not allowed to type anything, but you must select the middle suggested text every time. Everyone takes a turn doing this until you finish the story.

Race Game

Mobile game or a video game. Single player or multi-player. A horse racing game where you can bet money that you earn by answering trivia questions. Once you get enough money you can bet on a horse to win the race and if you win you double your earnings. If you lose, you lose 10 points.

Shot Roulette

This will be a virtual board that you can spin and share your screen with others to show. Theres a wheel where there are different types of alcohol shots on the board. Everyone selects their guess. You bet on which one you think the arrow will land on and then if you lose you drink the shot that was picked.

Review 3

I have chosen Burgatory and La Prima coffee company as two restaurants to compare to. Burgatory has a great flow to their website, but stands out also. Burgatory’s website is very easy to read, and has really great navigation as well. The only thing that is bothersome is that some of the elements of design makes the site look busy. On La Prima coffee company’s website they have a very simple and clean look. There isn’t anything that is too busy on the website. This makes everything easy to see and great to navigate as well. There is also a visual hierarchy on the Burgatory website, however, La Prima does have some hierarchy but not as visual as Burgatory. Burgatory definitely has the hierarchy in place that is not mistaken for anything else. On both sites there is a clear explanation of everything that is going on. There is no “frilly” text involved on either website. Burgatory has some fun text involved but it is short and sweet. There is good balance to both of the websites and well. Burgatory has a lot of emphasis on their website, especially with their colors on their menu bar. I find that Burgatory is more attention getting just because of the boldness and the colors on the site.

Review 4

I chose the website laprima.com for the competition against my website. La Prima is a coffee company in Pittsburgh, and their website is done really well. In my website I have a slideshow as well, but their slideshow takes up the entire background. Their navigation is really great because it is next to their logo in the menu bar. Everything is really easy to read, and easy to navigate. The colors on laprima.com is really well done. The colors match with the brand and is really clean and modern.

The website that I have done with my group is nicely done. It seems clean, but it does not really compare to laprima.com. Laprima.com is very clean and modern, and there is also a good flow to their website. We have a great flow with our website, but it’s a very limited website. It’s very simple, and definitely more of a beginner’s website. Our website will have a cool pattern to it to help the website stand out. It also has a great font, and it’s very simple as well.

One Page Love Review

The website that I chose from onepagelove.com is called Vespillo-lefilm.com. The sites title page starts out as very dark and mysterious. The background is a gradient black with silver lettering to make the lettering stand out. Also, there is a wooden coffin in the center of the page to make it stand out. The site in the very beginning is attention grabbing and mysterious. The mystery of the color and the smoky texture on the page makes you want to scroll. The scroll pattern seems to be floating, making it easy to scroll through. The scrolling is mostly up and down, except for a few panels. Some of the panels do scroll sideways, but they do flow really well. 

            The flow of the page is one of my favorite parts of the website. One-page websites can be stale when one scrolls up and down, but this site has both to make it interesting. There are some sketches in the website as well, and that gives a texture of viewing the sketches on paper. The site also has some 3-D qualities as well, as if you are in the website itself. It’s a really well-done website and is attention getting.

Review Website: AVON

            I researched the website Avon.com. Avon is a beauty website where people can buy makeup, clothes, etc., at great prices. The site is huge and has a lot of products for people to choose from. The site does a great job making finding products easy, even though there is a lot of products. There are even beauty tips to help those purchase their products, and there are even rewards for shoppers. Some can even become an Avon representative to sell their products outside of the website. 

The website has a white background, which is great to show off products because makeup is colorful and stands out on its own. They are trying to sell the makeup and they need a clean background in order to have the makeup look appealing. Also, the use of fonts is clear and easy to see. Some of the font is a little small because they try to fit everything on their website in one place. The title of the page does stand out without it being to flashy. The site has a very basic set up, it’s very rectilinear. Also, they have some pink colored areas on the website where they grab people’s attention. I think that there could be more pink areas on the website because there are other things that need the attention. They do well in marketing their products but there could be a bit more added to the site to have things stand out.
