What makes a good game?

I think a good game is one that makes you think a little bit and allows you to come up with different strategies to win. I think that it’s important that you can be competitive while playing a game, but that it doesn’t get too serious where it ends up in a bunch of arguments. I think a good game is one where you just have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously. A storyline to a game isn’t necessary, but it can add another level to a game which can add to the overall experience.

Review for Persist

For this game we had to fill out a scorecard where we had to rank our top three life values out of career, health, relationships, and leisure. The higher the ranking – the more cards needed to reach the life value. The game is very similar to Cards Against Humanity. It’s a really easy game to play and it’s really funny. I really enjoyed this game and I would play it again.

card game ideas

1. Tic Tac Toe

Each person has a deck of cards and they put 9 cards out in front of them. If they don’t have tic tac toe, they draw a card and can replace any one of the nine cards. Once someone gets tic tac toe, they collect the cards and replace them with cards from the deck. Whoever has the most matches at the end of the game wins.

2. Deal all the cards out to everyone playing. Once you put down all of the matches, the game starts. Each player passes one card to their right. Whoever runs out of cards first wins.

3. Guess Who

Each person has a deck of cards in front of them and has one card as their ‘person.’ Each player takes turns asking if the ‘person’ has a certain quality – i.e. if it is a spade. If it is a spade, the other person flips over all of the cards that aren’t a spade. Whoever can guess the other player’s ‘person’  first wins.

4. Run

Each person starts off my putting 5 cards down. They then take turns drawing a card and replacing one of the original 5. Whoever gets a run first – i.e. 2 3 4 5 6 – wins.

5. Card Train

Each person has 10-15 cards out of a shuffled deck. Up to 4 players take 15 cards, 5 or 6 take 12, and 7 or 8 take 10. There is a ‘hub slot’ for each player and a card that starts the personal trains. Draw a card and put it in the middle of the hub to start the individual trains. The person to the left of whoever drew the first card for the communal train goes first. This then goes in a clockwise direction. Each person can either add one card to the communal train or they can add to their personal train if the card matches the hub card. If a player doesn’t have a move, they can choose a face down card from the ‘boneyard.’ If they still don’t have a move, they have to take the last card off of their personal train and that train becomes communal. Anyone can add to your personal train until you can add to it, which makes it a personal train again. Whoever runs out of cards first wins. To add to a train, the cards either have to be the same color, suit, face, or number.

zombie fluxx game review

Zombie Fluxx is a card game where the rules are constantly changing. Each player starts off with three cards and when it’s your turn you draw one card then play one card. There are four main cards: actions, goals, keepers, and rules. After the action card is played, you put it in the discard pile. The goal cards determine what two keeper cards you need to win the game. The goal cards can change during the game, which can make your chances of winning easier or harder . The rules cards are constantly being added to or taken away from play which can make the game confusing.

The first round was very confusing. It took us a while to figure out how to play the game and the instructions didn’t really help. Once we understood the instructions, the game was a lot easier to play. I didn’t think that it was very fun and I wouldn’t go out of my way to play it again. I spent a lot more time trying to understand how to play the game than enjoying playing the game.

Week 1 Game Ideas

  1. Each person has a score card that is ranked 2-12. When you roll a number mark it off on the sheet. If you roll a number that you already marked off subtract that number from the overall score at the end. Whoever has the highest score wins.
  2. Each person has 5 cards and rolls the dice. Whoever rolls the highest number takes a card out of the shuffled deck. Whoever gets the most matches and is out of cards first wins. Each person also has their own dice and deck of cards.
  3. Everyone bets poker chips and rolls two dice. Whoever rolls the highest number wins the poker chips, unless someone rolls a double and then they win.
  4. Roll one dice and the number you roll is the number of cards that you draw from the deck – each person gets 8 rolls. Whoever can make the most matches wins. If the cards that you matched are the same color, number, or all of the same number – you get bonus points.
  5. Golf – Everyone gets a golf score sheet for nine ‘holes.’ Each person takes a turn to roll one dice to determine the ‘par’ of the hole. The par is applied to every player for that hole until the next hole, when someone else rolls the dice and then that number is the new par. Whoever is ‘teeing off’ has to roll two dice until they roll a double. Each roll is considered a ‘stroke.’ If you roll a double on the first try it is a ‘hole in one,’ second try is an ‘eagle,’ and so on. Every one has their own score card and dice.

The website that I consider completion for my fusion restaurant is La Prima. The layout of La Prima’s website is very clean and compartmentalized. The color scheme of their website is very neutral with sticking with dark grey, coffee brown, and light blue. They had a sense of texture in their pictures primarily in their pictures of coffee grounds. Their menu bar is just a button that says menu that slides out after you click on it. It gives you the option of what page you want to see and goes into different types of coffee you can buy when you click on shop. I think the website now is effective, but also a little too much. You have to think a little bit about where you need to go when you first open the site. I think it would be more effective if the menu bar went across the top of the page under the logo to give it a better sense of navigation.

My final project site is more effective and stands out more than La Prima’s because our menu bar is at the top of the page so you can see your options clearly and it has the visited link color change so you can see where you already looked. The other difference between the two sites is the choice of color. La Prima’s site has more earth tones while the final project site has brighter colors that catch your attention better than La Prima’s.

Hopkins Review 3

The two websites that I chose to compare are the Six Penn Kitchen website and the No. 9 Park website. The website for the Six Penn Kitchen seems to be balanced better than the website for No. 9 Park. Everything is evenly balanced in a defined area, centered on the page. No. 9 Park’s website does not seem as balanced as Six Penn Kitchen because you cannot get a feel of the whole website. The overall look is organized, with pictures dividing the page, but you do not get a sense of symmetry from scrolling through.

I think the Six Penn Kitchen site has a better sense of unity than the No. 9 Park site. Six Penn Kitchen’s site is aesthetically pleasing with the colors playing off each other nicely. The color of the text coordinates with the pictures that they chose to use, which makes the overall look nice. No. 9 Park has a nice sense of unity by carrying the same look throughout the site.

The main emphasis on Six Penn Kitchen’s site is where it says “After 12 great years, we will be closing our doors on February 17.” This part draws the most attention because it is at the top of the page with the message in a bold font. The areas on No. 9 Park’s site that has the most emphasis is the areas where it has pictures filling up the page. Each picture has a header summarizing the information below it.

The layout of Six Penn Kitchen is very simple, but looks good as a whole. This contrasts the No. 9 Park layout due to it being a fancier layout. The layout is more spread out and interactive, but also simple and easy to use.

Both websites use Krug’s first important thing by being easy to use without getting frustrated. They are also both self-evident, don’t make you think, and helps you find information in a timely manner. The only difference between the two is that you do not have a back button on the Six Penn Kitchen site since the rest of the site is not accessible, but the back button works on the No. 9 Park site.

The Six Penn Kitchen is more effective than the other one at drawing my attention because everything is in one area, it’s clean and simple, and the colors grabbed my attention.

shop.nhl.com review – Anna Hopkins

Shop NHL is a site where you can get merchandise for any hockey team in the NHL. They mainly sell jerseys for almost everyone on each team along with player t-shirts. Along with that they also sell a large variety of other things that include:  hats, bags, and jackets. There is a bar at the top of the page where you can select the option of shop by team, jerseys, hats, more, or the option to search for something specific. The color scheme is neutral with there being a light grey bar at the top of the page and two dark grey bars below it with a white background. I clicked on the search bar at the top of the page and I searched for a Sidney Crosby jersey instead of clicking on the shop by team link and then finding the jersey on the Pittsburgh Penguins site.

When I searched for the jersey, all of the Sidney Crosby jersey options showed up immediately. At the top of the page it says how many jerseys are on that page. Along with that there is a drop down box that says top sellers to refine the search and a drop down box to pick how many things you want to see on each page. On the left, there is a vertical bar that has the options to refine the search more. It has an NHL drop down box with Pittsburgh Penguins below it, a drop down shop for box with the options of men, kids, women, and baby. There is also a department, custom shop, and a price range drop down box to pick from.

The usability of this website is easy to use for anyone that wants to get any NHL merchandise. There are multiple ways to find what you are looking for by either searching for it in the search bar or going through the shop by team option. From the time I went onto the website to the time I had the jersey in my cart it took less than a minute due to the website being easy to use and laid out perfectly.

Hopkins – Review 2

The website that I chose to evaluate is milkshake. This website uses a lot of different colors throughout the site. At the top there is a banner that changes color and takes up the whole page that has the logo milkshake at the top and ‘Make a free Insta website on your phone’ with a link for get app for early access and one for a video. Along with the different colors, as you scroll through the website pictures pop up on the side of the screen to add texture.

Since this is a single page, to navigate you have to scroll top to bottom to find the content that you are looking for.

The design elements that make the website easy to scan are that it has a standardized appearance, has effective visual hierarchies, things are “nested” visually, and has a format text that makes scanning easy.

I think that this website is done well because it has a lot of layers to it without being overbearing. All of the content is easy to find and the different color blocks and animation help dictate what piece of information goes where.
