Game Ideas: Theme – Basketball

NBA Monoply – It would be the same as a typical Monoply game with a few twist. Instead of properties it would be the courts. The pieces would be some of the top players and the hotels and houses would be championship trophies. Each time you would typically “Pass go” in regualr monoply, here it is a little different. Each time you “Pass go”, you go to playoffs. This means you must pick your best to battle for the championship and if you win you get the pot. The pot gets contibuted through “Hoop Cards”, Utility Fees, etc.

Time-Traveling Dunkers – Players would travel from different generations of basketball, facing some of the top teams in history. Each era has it’s own rules, syle, and callenges catered to that generation. Players don’t have limited resources, they may unlock unique moves, and past techniques and combine them to win.

Basketball Dynasty- Players build their own basketball franchise. Players draft players, manage finances, and make strategic decisions to lead their team to championships. Each turn involves player actions like training, trades, and game simulations based on dice rolls or cards. Events can influence team dynamics, like injuries or hot streaks.

Court of Champions – A competitive board game where players navigate a basketball court, aiming to score points by completing challenges and trivia related to basketball history and rules. Players move around the board based on dice rolls, landing on spaces that require them to answer questions or perform physical challenges (like making a paper ball into a trash can) to earn points.

Dunk or Die – Players must compete in various mini-games focused on basketball skills, creativity, and teamwork. The goal is to earn points through dunks and trick shots. Players draw challenge cards that dictate tasks, such as “Create a trick shot using two household items” or “Perform a basketball-related charade.” Others vote on the best performance for points.

Review on Photosynthesis

Was it fun? Yes, but no. The game was somewhat fun once you learned what you were doing.

What were the player interactions? This game didn’t have to much interactions among the players, it was more about where you planted your trees and how fast you grew them.

How long did it take to learn? It took a very long time for us to get started, and even as we started to figure out what it was that we were supposed to be doing, we still had to pause to figure out the answers to our questions along the way. We then discovered that we were playing the game partially wrong about half way through.

Would you play it again? I may play it again, but it would depend on what other options that there are. It most likely wouldn’t be my first choice.

Analyze the game using the 3 act structure.

Act 1 – would be reading the instructions and setting up the trees, and seeds on each players board. This was a long process at first because we were not given the clearest instructions.

Act 2- We finally starting planting trees and using our light points to buy more seeds to plant more trees and buying more trees to upgrade them.

Act 3- When we finally starting to uproot out large trees for points and then we could start to see who was going to win the game.

What are the collaborative and or competitive aspects of the game? This game is more the competitive type. It’s all about where you place your trees, and how fast you grow them so you can uproot your large trees for points.

What is the game’s metaphor and which of the game’s mechanics standout? The mechanics of this game is very simillar to how it would be in reality with the rotation of the sun and planting a seed and the tree growing.

5 Collaboration Game Ideas

  1. End Goal– a game where each player has a different task where the all have different roles for example (detective, strategist, and medic), and work together to complete the goal or task.
  2. Quest Map– a game where the group of players is given a map with clues and mysteries and they have to work together together to figure out where the finally destination is on the map to slove the mystery.
  3. War of the Survivors– Each player has to rely on the rest of their team or their oppenants to get questions right so they can gain rewards and move along to their quest. Wrong answers will cause one of the survivors to die off.
  4. Can I find my way– all of the players have to work together to find there path through the board. The game has no physical instructions so they have to figure what the objective is without really knowing one.
  5. Build a Bridge– Each group is stuck in a random room or place and they have to find a way to build the bridge or structure that the card they pic says, by only using objects that are currently in that space. Twist: the card may have further restrictions.

Review of Pamdemic

Was it fun?

  • The game was not very fun in my opinion. I like games where you compete against each other instead.

What were the player interactions?

  • This game was very interactive for each player had to be apart of each others turns (acting as a whole).

How long did it take to learn?

  • The game at first took awhile to learn because the instructions were rather long and by the time you went onto page two you already forgot what was mentioned in page 1. When we ginally decided to just start playing then it wasn’t so bad. The instructions a very wordy and make the game seem a lot more complicated then it actually is. All you have to do work as a team to try to end all the diseases.

Would you play it again?

  • It defiently wouldn’t be at the top of my list, but I may play it again just to see if I can beat it.

Anaylze the game using the 3 act structure?

  • We started out by trying to figure out how to play the game by reading the instructions (was not working out very well). Then we finally started to figure out how the game works and that we had to play as a team in order to have a chance at winning. As the game was coming to a close, we realized that we had no chnace at winning due to the lack of cards that we had left.

What are the collaborative and or competitive aspects of the game?

  • This game requires a ton of collaberation. Each player must converse about each of their moves to make sure that everyone is on the same page. There is no such thing as defend for yourself or single play in this game.

What is the game’s metaphor and which of the game’s mechanics standout?

  • The game’s metaphor would probably have something to with how things don’t always go as planned even if you try to come up with a solution to the problem. The different charcter cards stood out to me because for example, I was the medic ans I can cure all diseases for that city in one action.

5 Card Game Ideas

Apples to apples college addition– basically the green cards would still be the same but the red cards would be things or events that would relate to a college kid.

Who does it best, so you think– each player draws a card from the deck, reads it out, whever the cars applies to the best they give the card to that person. However, another player can challege it by trying to do whatever it is better.

Luck of the draw– Each player draws a card from the deck, each card has a task for the player. You never know what the task may be or what problems it my cause, Goal of the game is to have to most prize cards at the end of the game.

Who am I?– There are 2 seperate decks or card, one being: People and the other: style/personality. Each player when it is there turn will draw a card from the people deck. The card will have 5. Different people’s names/ personalities. The other players have to use thier style/personality cards to describe the person they choose without knowing who it is. The person who’s turn it is then has to decide whose card best matches.

Is this the truth or a lie? – Each player when it’s their turn has to draw a card from the “prompts” pile. The prompt will say something to share with the group, the player can either choose to say a truth or a lie. The other players will then have to decide whether they are telling the truth or a lie. Wrong answers have consequence. Each wrong answer results in picking up a card from the “lie” pile and following the instructions on that card.

Week 2 Questions

Questions Set 1:

What Mechanics would you like to use for a game with a theme that revolves around being the size of an nanometer? I would like to use some form of mechanics that would allow you to tour each others minds.

Who are you making games for? As of right now, I have not decided what my target audience would be.

Who will be your play testers outside of class? A combination of co-workers, family, friends, and maybe some of the local rink rats.

Questions Set 2:

Can you think of a game that you were able to play without referring to the rules? Basic card games, LCR, and Mini hoops.

How do you define what a game is? A game is anthing that has an objective to solve or get to or an activity to do..

What features can make your game more intuitive? Adding a competive aspect among players, and by having more than one possible outcome.

Questions Set 3:

What was your gateway game? What do you play to introduce others to gaming? My gateway game was either monopoly or candy land.

What features do gateway games share? Gateway games are low mantience games, they are often enjoyed by families and easy to learn.

What are the 10 beautiful mechanics and what should you aim for with your own? Drawing cards, buy property, spending money, recieving money, paying rent, moving pieces, rolling dice, stacking hotels, brickering with opennts, and strategy. Including a few mechanics will draw more attraction to your game and keep your audience interested.

How does luck and game strategy factor into game play? Besides dice games and gambling strategy is a bigger factor than luck. You hold your own potential in each game based on what move you choose, Yes, sure you can get a card thrown your way that messes up your whole plan but at the end of the day you still have to stratgize how to get out of the situation.

Munchkin Review

Was it fun? Yes, munckin was very fun once I started playing and understood what I was doing.

Is it interactive? Munckin is very interactive, it is all about sabatoging evryone else’s game whether you are stealing some else’s cards, levels or making their battle harder on them.

Was it easy to learn? Munchkin is easy to learn if you aren’t starting out with reading the instructions. There are so many pages of intructions to the point when we were half way through reading the instructions I couldn’t remember what the first page said. It is by far much better to start playing and follow the intructions on the cards. Then refer to the instructions if you need to.

Would you replay? I would defiently play this game again, just maybe not against certain people lol.

3 Act Structure

Act 1:

The game took a long time at first to get started because the instructions were very long and wonky. Once you start playing it is still hard to keep the game flowing because not only do you have to keep referring back to the intructions but you also have several cards that you cannot use in the beginning because there are other cards that need to go with it in order to be played.

Act 2:

We finally started to get a hang of the game and the rules started to make sense. We all started gaining levels and you can tell who was trying hard to win. The game started to get a little competitive at this point.

Act 3:

Everyone started to play their sabtoge cards against each other to try to steal each others levels to win the game which eventually caused a major dispute that lasted about 20 mintues. The game unfortunately resulted in a tie because it was never finished before class ended.

Game Ideas

  • Table Top Gaming Marathon on Nicholson Lawn. (Ping Pong, Pool, Football, Air Hockey, etc)
  • Glow and the Dark scavenger hunt
  • Name the professor based on the clues
  • Obstacle course that goes throughout campus
  • Minute to win it – Carnival games addition

FLUXX Game Questions

Was It Fun?

At first I didn’t think Fluxx was fun an that was mainly because I had no idea what I was doing. However, as the game went on and I started to catch onto the rules an get a feel for how the game works (you need to play dirty), I started to enjoy it.

What was the interaction?

This game involves a ton of interaction. The game forces you to interactwith your opponents a lot whether you are stealing cards, battling your keepers, or sabbatoging your opponents winning abaility.

How long did it take to learn?

This game is not supper hard to learn unless you are just reading the instructions. When I first started out reading the instructions it made me even more confused then when my peers were explaining it to me. After observing what my peers were doing for a few rounds, I was able to catch on very quickly.

Would you play again?

Yes, I would most certainly play this game again.

Game Design Week 1 Questions

In Your Opinion what should every game have? Why do you like your favorite game?

In my opinion every game needs to have some sort of challenge or end goal. I get highly competitive during games and if I dont have anyone to compete against or something to compete for than I find the game rather boring. My favorite game is monopoly because it is a great family game and the leader board can change rather quickly.

List the games you have played or currently Play.

Well let’s see although I don’t play video games that much anymore, I used to play a lot of games when I was younger. Here are some: Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Call of Duty, Zelda, Resident and Evil, Wipe Out, Just Dance, Mario Kart, Sper Mario Bros, Minecraft, Donkey Kong, PacMan, 8 Ball Pool, Crossy Roads, NBA Mobile, Color Switch, Slitherio, Snake, Word Escapes, Papa’s Freezeria, 2k, and honestly I am probably missing some. In terms of board games some of which I probably play now are: Apples to Apples, Monopoly, Life, trouble, uno, and cards against humanity.

Can you apply the three-act structure to your favorite game? What is its pacing and how long do you find yourself in each act?

I am not really sure that Monopoly can be broken down into the three-act structure because it’s not a game that has a narrative. Monopoly is a more-open-end came and the possibilities are up to the players in the game.

When coming up with ideas where do you find your start, with the metaphor or the mechanics?

I would say I start with mechanics and then work on the metaphor. I would rather start with what I would like each character to do rather than jump into the whole overview.

Over the course of this semester, who would you like to collaberate with and why?

There are nobody inparticular I would like to collab with. Everyone in this class is uniquely creative and has different strengths and weakness. It’s always enjoyable to me to see what ideas everyone else comes up with.

Interactive Story- “Which Game?”

IDEA: The original idea I had forr this story was of it to be in an acutal book and you flip the pages and the different animations play. As time went on I decided that I would have icons appeear so the user can choose which annimation that they want to play next.

Creating this project was a lot of trial and error especially trying to figure out what type of software. I tried to make it a HTML File it worked it terms of making it interactive in that software, which I don’t even rember what I used for that. However, when I tried to take that HTML file and put it into another software and I tried many different ones. I could never get it to stay interactive no matter what I tried.

So in the end I decided just to put it in aero after created the animations in procreate and exporting them as gifs. However, that wasn’t the easiest thing to do either for I had to dowloand each layer as it’d own png and make that zip file to the only import it in aero. Sometimes that wouldn’t work the first time either. So after a couple of tries I would then only be able to import it into aero.

So overall this project was rather difficult and I spent tons of time doing trial and error. I had so many more ideas for this project that I just didn’t have time for. I had both a baseball scene and a hockey scene drawn out that you will see below that I just didn’t have time to incorporate. I would have love to spend more time annimating more parts in each scene.

In conclusion I have learned a lot while doing thid project and I think that it is deffiently something that I was to revist in the near future.

StoryBoard

Here is a recorded version of the project in aero.

Second Looping Narrative-Tobe Can’t Find Giraffe

IDEA-Tobe the Turlte lost his friend Giraffe and he has no idea when he went. So Tobe goes on a journey to find his friend Giraffe. He stops by each of his friend to try to find the Giraffe and so far nobody knows where the Giraffe is until when he is playing with the otter and he sees him.

I wanted to have the scenes animated into a book so that the pages flip and the scene plays however I never actually got that far due to me being very sick the clast two weeks. So this is the project that I was Going to scrap my initial drawing with the windows and picture frames for. However, due to time I went back to that one.

I really need to learn to just sticl with one project. I hope to still use this story idea and some of this stuff for a future project.

Storyboard

Here is the book it was gonna go in

Looping Narrative- The Guessing game

IDEA- So my original idea for this project was to do room drawings in a 3 point perspective and then have a window and have it changing from night to day. However I wanted to build open that and also make moving pictures frames so that each day the window tirns into a moving picture frame and by night it goes back to be a normal window. I wanted the frames to be like a tomb stone with text to make it seem mysterious

Then a week before Thankgiving Break I decided to completely change my story to be about a Turlte looking for his friend Giraffe. I decided that I didn’t like the hand drawn post anymore and that I wanted to try a digital approach.

However, the world always loves to throw me curve balls, so basically I planned to finish this project over Thankgiving Break. However the first half of Break I had straight migrianes and little did Iknow that was the begining of me having the flu for the rest of break and the week after. So to say the least I wasn’t able to work on anything. So with everything considered I decied to go back to the hand drawing since I pretty much had it done when I decided to get rif of it. I still will include what I had done of the Turtle story In another post as well as the storyboard that says what else I plan on doing with it.

Here is the Story Board for the Mystery Frames.

Here Is looping Narrative-The Guessing Game

Bedroom with Day to Night Changing Windows

Interactive Poster- Movie Theatre

IDEA- The original Idea I had was to have an interactive movie theatre where the viewer picks the outcome of the show, that is still kind of the case but it Just doesn’t go that far into specfic details but rather just asks a simple yes or no and then the journey begins. Pick “Yes” by selecting the check mark and the game begins, click on “No” and the game ends.

Here is my story board in which shows the idea for. the flow of the interactive animation.

Here are all the scenes in Larger view:
