Mike Selinker\u2019s 10 rules for rule writing – Kobold Guide to Board Game Design<\/strong> page 90-98<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Don\u2019t use intermediary terminology – just call items what they are<\/li>
  2. Use real words – Once you have a real word for something, don\u2019t call that something anything else<\/li>
  3. Make no more work than necessary – Players shouldn\u2019t be required to exert themselves to learn the game – remove any unnecessary rules<\/li>
  4. Add Flavor – but not too much<\/li>
  5. Rules should be no smarter than your reader<\/li>
  6. Don\u2019t include a rule you can\u2019t write – meaning if you can\u2019t explain it don\u2019t include it<\/li>
  7. Take a breath – keep it short and be succinct\u00a0<\/li>
  8. Go easy on the eyes – rules should be legible and formatted to be easy to scan<\/li>
  9. Playtest – every version of the rules, and (visit the writing center for editing if needed)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
