Narrative Loops

The goal of this assignment is to show your understanding of a narrative arch as defined by Gustav Frytag, and perspective in the dimensional and emotional sense as well as the subjective and objective sense.

Begin by storyboarding your story and deciding what perspective it will be told from, first, second or third. From your storyboards, you should create five loops that end and begin with the same frame. You should have one loop for each segment of Frytag’s triangle to move your narrative forward. You may choose which style and formate of animation. 

Benchmarks

  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Outline the narrative using Frytag’s Triangle
  • Create assets based on your storyboards by hand drawing or using Illustrator, Photoshop or other software.
  • Animate assets based on storyboards and create loops for each part of your story
  • Test, troubleshoot and refine.

Requirements

  • Storyboards that outline your narrative and perspective
  • 5 Looping animations
    • Each loop should be no less than 12 frames and no more than 72 frames
  • Animations can be hand or digitally drawn
  • Animation formate/ technique can be stop motion, flip book, zoetrope or sprite
  • Fame size should match or chosen formate. If a spite frames should be no more than 500 pixels in any one direction – you may select an aspect ratio that fits your story / formate
  • Final presentations of these can be uploaded here, to youtube, tiktok or your own website.

This will be assessed on Storyboards, Narrative, Craft, Aesthetics, Experimentation, and Iterations/ Revisions
